About Liberation Day
Liberation Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands marking the end of the German occupation in 1945, at the close of the Second World War in Europe. Although it is celebrated every year, it is generally given as a day off from work only once every five years, in jubilee years.
Traditions
It follows Remembrance of the Dead on the evening of 4 May, when the country observes two minutes of silence. On Liberation Day itself, liberation festivals with free concerts are held in towns across the country.
