Where to go for Unification Day

Unification Day marks the 1885 union of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, proclaimed in Plovdiv. Early September usually keeps summer warmth, and when 6 September falls on a Monday or Friday it creates a three-day weekend.

Budget-friendly

  • Kyustendil

Kyustendil province includes the Seven Rila Lakes, walked in summer and early autumn from the Panichishte area with an optional chairlift, as well as Rila Monastery. Back in town, mineral baths suit tired legs after a day of hiking.

Typically around 6 September: high 24°C (75°F), low 11°C (52°F), rain on 27% of days.

About Unification Day

Unification Day on 6 September marks the unification in 1885 of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia, an autonomous Ottoman province that had been created by the Congress of Berlin in 1878. The union was proclaimed in Plovdiv after a bloodless uprising and was then defended in the Serbo-Bulgarian War later that year. It is regarded as an important step in the formation of the modern Bulgarian state.

Traditions

The main celebrations take place in Plovdiv, the city where the union was proclaimed, with official ceremonies, concerts and festive events. Flags are displayed across the country, and official ceremonies are held in Sofia and other towns.
