About Labour Day

Labour Day, on the first Monday of September, honours workers and the labour movement in Canada. It grew out of union demonstrations in the 1870s, including a printers' strike and parade in Toronto, and became a federal statutory holiday in 1894. It is separate from International Workers' Day on 1 May, which is not a public holiday in Canada.

Traditions

Some unions and cities still hold Labour Day parades and picnics. The long weekend is widely seen as the end of summer before the school year begins, and it is associated with family outings and, in the Canadian Football League, traditional Labour Day rivalry games.
