About All Souls' Day

All Souls' Day on 2 November is a Christian day of prayer for the faithful departed. It follows All Saints' Day, and in Western churches the custom of a common day of remembrance for the dead on this date dates back to the Middle Ages. In many countries it is a day for remembering deceased relatives, even where it is not a public holiday.

Traditions

Families visit cemeteries to tend and decorate graves, often leaving flowers and lighting candles. Churches hold Masses and services for the dead, and in some cultures special foods are prepared in memory of departed relatives.
