About Constitution Day
Constitution Memorial Day marks the entry into force of the Constitution of Japan on 3 May 1947. Drafted during the Allied occupation, the constitution established popular sovereignty, made the emperor a symbol of the state, guaranteed fundamental human rights and, in Article 9, renounced war as a sovereign right of the nation.
Traditions
The day falls within Golden Week, and many people travel or spend time with family. Groups both supporting and opposing amendment of the constitution hold rallies and meetings, and the constitution is widely discussed in the media around the date.
