About Christmas Day
Christmas in Mexico is part of a longer festive season that begins in mid-December and continues until the Day of the Three Kings on 6 January, and for some until Candlemas on 2 February. Many customs combine Catholic tradition with local practices, and the main family celebration takes place on Christmas Eve, Nochebuena.
Traditions
From 16 to 24 December, communities hold posadas, gatherings that re-enact Mary and Joseph's search for lodging, with songs, candles and piñatas. Homes display nativity scenes and poinsettias, known as flores de Nochebuena. Christmas Eve dinner may include bacalao, romeritos, turkey or tamales, with ponche, a warm fruit punch.
