About Easter Sunday
Easter, known in Portugal as Páscoa, is one of the main religious and family celebrations of the year. Alongside the church services held across the country, Portuguese Easter has several customs of its own, particularly in the north and in rural parishes.
Traditions
A typical Easter food is the folar, a sweet or savoury bread whose form varies by region and which is traditionally given by godparents to their godchildren. In many northern parishes the compasso pascal takes place, with a parish group carrying a crucifix from house to house so that families can kiss it and receive an Easter blessing.
