About Labor Day

Labour Day on 1 May is a nationwide public holiday in Germany, known locally as Tag der Arbeit or simply Erster Mai. It is part of the international workers' day tradition that grew out of the labour movement of the late nineteenth century, and it remains closely associated with trade unions and the campaign for fair working conditions.

Traditions

Trade unions hold rallies and marches in many cities. In southern Germany and other regions, villages raise a decorated maypole, often with a local festival. Many people also celebrate the evening before with dances known as Tanz in den Mai, and the day itself is a popular time for walks and outings.
