About Labor Day
Labour Day, Protomagia, on 1 May is a public holiday in Greece. It commemorates the labour movement and workers' rights, including the struggle for an eight-hour working day, and it is also traditionally celebrated as a festival of spring and flowers, with roots in older seasonal customs.
Traditions
Trade unions often hold rallies and demonstrations. Many people go out to the countryside to pick wild flowers and make May wreaths, which are hung on front doors or balconies. The day is also popular for picnics and excursions.
