About Ohi Day
Ohi Day on 28 October commemorates Greece's rejection of an ultimatum delivered by fascist Italy in 1940, which demanded that Italian forces be allowed to occupy parts of Greece. The answer of Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas is remembered as "Ohi" (No). Italy invaded the same day, bringing Greece into the Second World War, and the Greek army pushed the invading forces back into Albania.
Traditions
The national flag is displayed on buildings and balconies. A military parade is held in Thessaloniki, and student parades take place in Athens and in towns and villages across the country. Church services and wreath-laying ceremonies honour those who fought in the war.
