About Republic Day
Republic Day commemorates the institutional referendum of 2 and 3 June 1946, in which Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and make Italy a republic. It was the first national vote in which Italian women took part. The same vote elected the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Italian Constitution.
Traditions
In Rome, the President of the Republic lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria, followed by a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali. The Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force aerobatic team, fly over the city trailing smoke in the colours of the flag.
