About Assumption Day
In Poland the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 15 August is also known as the feast of Our Lady of the Herbs, Matki Boskiej Zielnej. The same date is Polish Armed Forces Day, which commemorates the Battle of Warsaw in 1920, when Polish forces defeated the Red Army, an event often called the Miracle on the Vistula.
Traditions
Bouquets of herbs, flowers and grain are taken to church to be blessed and are then kept at home. Many pilgrims reach the Jasna Góra monastery in Częstochowa around this time, often after walking for days. A military parade or official ceremonies take place in Warsaw for Armed Forces Day.
