About National Independence Day

National Independence Day on 11 November commemorates the restoration of Poland's independence in 1918, after 123 years in which its territory had been partitioned between Russia, Prussia and Austria. On that day Józef Piłsudski was handed military command in Warsaw, and the date became the symbol of the rebirth of the Polish state.

Traditions

Official ceremonies take place in Warsaw, including the changing of the guard and wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Flags are displayed widely, and cities hold parades, marches, concerts and runs. Many people also attend church services for the homeland.
