About Epiphany
Epiphany, known in Romania as Boboteaza, is celebrated on 6 January and commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan. It is one of the main feasts of the winter season, closing the cycle of Christmas and New Year celebrations, and it is a public holiday in Romania.
Traditions
Priests perform the Great Blessing of the Waters, and worshippers take home holy water, called agheasmă, to drink and to bless their homes. In many places a priest throws a wooden cross into a river, lake or the sea, and young men dive into the cold water to retrieve it, which is believed to bring good health.
