About Labor Day
Labour Day on 1 May is a public holiday in Romania, as in many other countries. It recalls the labour movement's campaign for better working conditions and shorter working hours, and honours the contribution of workers to society. In Romanian folk tradition the same date is also Arminden, a spring celebration when green branches were placed at gates and doors.
Traditions
For most people the day is an occasion to rest and spend time outdoors. It is traditionally associated with picnics, barbecues and trips to the countryside, the mountains or the Black Sea coast.
