About Diwali (Deepavali)

Diwali, or Deepavali, is the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs, and is one of the major festivals of the Indian calendar. For many Hindus it marks the return of Rama to Ayodhya and honours Lakshmi, goddess of wealth. Jains mark the attainment of nirvana by Mahavira, and Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas on the same occasion.

Traditions

Homes are cleaned and decorated with oil lamps called diyas, electric lights and rangoli designs. Families perform prayers, especially Lakshmi Puja in the evening, wear new clothes, exchange sweets and gifts, and set off fireworks. Celebrations often extend over several days.
