About Guru Nanak's Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Guru Nanak Gurpurab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. It is traditionally observed on the full moon of the lunar month of Kartik. Guru Nanak taught devotion to one God, the equality of all people and honest living.
Traditions
In the days before, gurdwaras hold an Akhand Path, a continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib from beginning to end, and early-morning processions sing hymns. On the day, gurdwaras are decorated with lights, and community kitchens known as langar serve free meals to everyone regardless of background.
