About Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri, meaning the great night of Shiva, is a Hindu festival dedicated to the god Shiva. It is observed on the fourteenth night of the dark half of the lunar month known as Phalguna or Magha, depending on the regional calendar, shortly before the new moon.
Traditions
Devotees often fast and keep a night-long vigil, chanting prayers and visiting Shiva temples. Offerings of water, milk and bael leaves are made to the Shiva lingam. Large gatherings take place at major Shiva temples and along rivers.
