About Christmas Day
Christmas Day celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Since 2023 Ukraine marks it on 25 December, after the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church moved most fixed feasts to the revised calendar; before that, the main Christmas holiday was 7 January. Under martial law it is a working day.
Traditions
Families gather on Christmas Eve for the Holy Supper of twelve meatless dishes, beginning with kutia, a dish of wheat, poppy seeds and honey. Carol singing, known as koliaduvannia, and church services continue through the holiday season.
